External Security
The system can be wired or wireless.
Wired systems are preferred when the detectors are not too far from the base and the wires can be hidden or sheathed.
Wireless systems use the same PIRs and beams as the wired systems but they are equipped with transmitters and the base station has a receiver. With the aid of repeaters the detectors can be located at a greater distance from the base.
If the base station is in an isolated area then a digital communicator can be used to send a message down the telephone line. If there is no telephone line then GSM technology is now being used.

The most common uses of external security are:
Protection
Diesel tanks - builders compounds - farm machinery - caravan storage sites - barns
They have also been used to protect trout farms, pheasant shoots and stables.
Warning
Driveways - yard entrances - garden ponds
External security systems consist of outside detectors that report back to a receiver/panel at the base to sound a warning .
The detectors are usually external PIRs. These are similar to the internal PIRs used in house alarms but are weatherproof and are designed to reduce false alarms from small animals and weather effects.
Another type of detector is a beam that can be set up to cross a road or entrance.
